About us

We are a research group focused on topics related to human metabolism and its chronic alterations, from the basic science, clinical and epidemiological perspectives.

Our work is placed at the crossroads of endocrinology, nutrition, biochemistry, and physiology. Our interests are centered in the understanding of chronic, non-communicable diseases linked to aging and lifestyle choices.

Some of our members are at a very advanced stage of their careers, while others are still undergraduate students. We actively keep a network of collaborations inside and outside Colombia.

We are currently classified in category A1 of the Colombian Ministry of Science and Technology (Minciencias).

Grupo de investigación

Our lab is located in building Z of the central campus of UniAndes, but activities related to our projects may also take place at several other locations.

Our lab is equipped with the basic tools for biochemistry and molecular biology work, including electrophoresis and Western Blot, fluorescent and chemiluminescent detection, cell culture, PCR, qPCR, ultracentrifugation and third generation sequencing in the Oxford Nanopore platform.

We also have mass spectrometry coupled to gas chromatography capabilities, and multiplex assays in a Luminex Magpix device.

We aspire to contribute at different levels with the understanding, prevention, opportune diagnosis, and treatment of alterations of human metabolism

Frequent questions

1. How can I join the group?

Most of the members have been medical students from the Universidad de los Andes, who undergo a guided reading process, at the end of which (if they complete it satisfactorily), they join the group. However, we are open to receiving members, especially postgraduates from other educational or health care institutions in Colombia or other countries, depending on the qualifications and interests of each person.

2. From which semester can I join the group?

Although there is no rigid limit of a minimum semester, it is necessary to have a solid foundation in biochemistry, physiology, and some pharmacology and epidemiology. For this reason, most of the members have joined the group in the fourth semester or later in their studies.

3. If I do not belong to the Universidad de los Andes, or if I am not a doctor or medical student, can I join the group? Are international students accepted?

We are open to collaborations with advanced students or professionals from other educational or health care institutions in Colombia or other countries, depending on the qualifications and interests of each person.

4. How often does the group meet?

The group has a regular 60-90 minute meeting each week. In addition, many activities take place in our laboratory and other settings, between meetings.

5. How is the group financed?

The University supports the group with the necessary infrastructure, a Laboratory Analyst and basic reagents. The costs associated with each project are financed with public, private or non-profit institution research grants.
